Columbarium

Answers to Our Most Frequently Asked Columbarium Questions

Americans are increasingly opting for cremation over traditional burial; therefore, the need for columbariums is on the rise.  Developing plans for a columbarium is a challenge, though, if you aren’t well-informed. At Columbarium Planners, we make the process of planning, designing, and constructing a columbarium as simple as possible. We’ve compiled a list of our most frequently asked questions to help you begin the process of planning for your community’s columbarium.

What Is a Columbarium?

A columbarium is a permanent structure made up of niches (i.e. spaces). These spaces house the urns and cremated remains of the deceased. Typically, columbariums are located outdoors, for ease of access. Oftentimes, they also contain a garden or other landscaping features.

Where Are Columbariums Located?

Columbariums are primarily located on church properties. However, they are also a growing part of many community cemeteries. With regard to site selection, our team will help you select the ideal location. First, we will conduct a site evaluation of your property. Then, we will produce a report of our findings, with a list of at least three potential locations. Lastly, with these recommendations in mind, your board and/or committee will decide on the final location.

What Are Niches?

Each wall of the columbarium is comprised of rows of small square spaces, called niches. Each niche is uniform in size and shape, and can house one or two urns. Additionally, each niche is covered with an engravable granite lid. Many churches pre-sell niches to family members to generate funds for construction.
